Frequently asked questions
Over 2k Epoxy floor coatings
Are the RAL colors on my (phone) screen correct?
Because these are RAL colors, there will always be a difference between the actual color and the colors on your screen. This is because the colors on your screen are in RGB. To get a good impression of the color, it is best to use a color fan. They often have them at the local hardware store. Our RAL colors are produced with a certified machine, which means there are no color deviations compared to the color fans.
What is the difference between the Pro and Basic Line?
How much primer do I need?
We assume 100 grams per m2.
How long should the primer dry before I can apply the coating?
The primer is often already dry after 6 to 8 hours, depending on the conditions. Want to be sure the primer is dry? Then wait 24 hours before applying the first coat of coating.
What is the difference between a floor coating and the garage floor coating?
The garage coating has a top layer that is better suited against plasticizers, which, for example, are present in car and bicycle tires. We always advise choosing the Pro variant for garages.
Can I use the coating outdoors?
That is possible, but applying it is a challenge. You actually need a reasonably stable temperature for 24 hours and it must stay dry. Morning dew immediately causes problems. You will then get white streaks and stains. In addition, sunlight can cause discoloration. If you want to use the coating outdoors, always choose our Pro Line.
what is the difference between the Pro and Basic Line?
Both coatings are of very high quality. The Pro Line is more scratch-resistant, plasticizer-resistant and better able to withstand UV. For floors with light use (for example a living room, shed or private garage) the basic is well suited. If the floor is subjected to slightly heavier use (for example a shop or workshop), we recommend the Pro Line.
Can you dilute the coating with water?
No, it is advisable to adhere to the mixing ratio that is supplied. Extra moisture will cause streaks and white spots.
How long should the protective varnish dry?
After 24 hours you can walk on it in socks, but it's best to subject it to heavy loads after 7 days.
I spread the epoxy over the floor and rolled it out, yet I still see some dull spots. Why is this?
Dull spots often indicate moisture. You could slightly warm the room and apply a second coat. That should solve the problem.
Can the coating be used with underfloor heating?
Our coating can be applied over underfloor heating. During application the underfloor heating must be turned off briefly.
Can Epoxy floor coating also be applied to interior walls?
Yes, that can be done. Applying it is a bit more difficult, because it only has a working time of 40-50 minutes.
Can this coating also be used on a wooden floor?
That is possible, but you will still see the shape of the underlying surface. This is because a coating follows the surface beneath it.
I would like to use decorative flakes on a light grey epoxy floor. Is that possible?
Yes, a resin with decorative or anti-slip flakes can be applied to our coating.
We want to use the coating in a steel manure container. Which coating is suitable for that?
I think there are special agricultural coatings. We don't have them.
If I have enough for two coats in one can, can I mix everything at once and store the second half until I need to apply it?
No, that won't work. After 40-60 minutes the coating is hard. We also advise against playing with the mixing ratios, because it's quite precise. For 2 coats we therefore always recommend 2 cans.
Can this coating also be used on basement walls to make them watertight?
We do not recommend that. The walls are often already somewhat damp and that can cause problems.
Is Epoxy floor coating slip-resistant?
Epoxy floor coatings can be slippery when wet; in, for example, sanitary areas or commercial kitchens one can therefore choose to mix an anti-slip powder into the coating.
Can epoxy be applied over existing floors?
Yes, epoxy can be applied over most existing floors; the most important thing is that the floor is clean and free of dust. In addition, it is always advised to degrease the floor and pre-treat it by sanding.
How long does it take for an epoxy floor to fully cure?
The curing of an epoxy floor can vary and is influenced by temperature and humidity. Most floors are walk-dry after 12-24 hours. For full curing and maximum (chemical) load you should allow approximately 7 days.
Are epoxy floors environmentally friendly?
Epoxy floors are durable and last a long time. Our waterborne coatings are solvent-free and therefore contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Can Epoxy floor coating be used outdoors?
Yes, that is possible. However, the application must be carried out when it is dry. It's also helpful if the outside temperature is stable so that the drying process goes well. If it is, for example, too humid, you can get streaks and color differences in the coating. Also always choose the pro-line, because it is more resistant to UV light.
Are there any disadvantages to using Epoxy floor coating?
Can Epoxy floor coatings be repaired if they are damaged?
How do you best apply epoxy to your floor?
To apply epoxy to your floor most effectively, follow these steps:
Preparation: Make sure the floor is clean, dry and free of dust, grease or oil. Repair any cracks.
Apply primer: Apply an epoxy primer for better adhesion.
Mixing: Mix the epoxy resin and hardener according to the instructions.
Application: Apply the epoxy evenly with a roller. Work in small sections.
How much does an epoxy floor cost per m2?
This depends on the number of coats. On average our coating costs approximately €9 per m2 (based on 2 coats).
Can epoxy be applied to a concrete floor?
Yes, epoxy can certainly be applied to a concrete floor. Concrete is even one of the most suitable surfaces for epoxy coatings because of its strength and flatness. Before you apply the epoxy, it is important to ensure that the concrete floor is clean, dry and free of cracks, oil or dust. Pre-treating the floor, such as sanding or applying a primer, may also be necessary to ensure good adhesion.
How much time between 2 coats of epoxy paint? How much time should I allow between 2 coats of coating?
We advise applying the second coat 24 to 48 hours after the first coat.
What is the difference between a coating and a poured floor?
The difference is in the thickness and the method of application: Epoxy floor coating is a thinner layer that is rolled or painted, while a poured epoxy floor is thicker and is poured and spread for a seamless finish.
I want to order a different floor color, is that possible?
We have a wide range of RAL colors. Is your color not among them? Then ask about the possibilities!
How much time between 2 coats of epoxy paint?
Usually you can apply the next coat after 12 hours.
What is the difference between PU and epoxy?
The difference between PU (polyurethane) and epoxy coatings lies mainly in their physical properties and applications:
Flexibility: PU is more flexible than epoxy. This makes PU better able to resist scratches and impacts, while epoxy is harder and more wear-resistant.
UV resistance: PU coatings are generally UV-stable and do not discolor quickly in the sun, while epoxy can yellow when exposed to UV radiation. We address this by adding a UV blocker to our coatings.
Chemical Resistance: Epoxy generally has better resistance to chemicals than PU, which is why it is often used in industrial environments.
Which type of coating is best for my floor?
To determine which coating is suitable for your type of floor, there are a number of factors you should consider:
Floor Type: Different floors such as concrete, wood, or tiles require specific coatings. For concrete, epoxy and polyurethane are popular choices.
Use of the Space: In industrial or commercial spaces where heavy loads occur, a strong and durable coating such as epoxy is ideal.
Exposure to Chemicals: If your floor is exposed to chemicals, oil, or acids, a chemically resistant coating such as epoxy is recommended.
Aesthetic Preferences: For a glossy, seamless finish a poured floor such as epoxy or PU can be suitable, while other options may be better for a more natural look.
Budget and Maintenance: Also consider your budget and how much maintenance you are willing to do. Some coatings may be more expensive to purchase but require less maintenance.
It's always a good idea to seek advice. Contact us if you have any questions about what suits you best.
For which types of floors are there floor coatings?
Floor coatings can be applied to various types of floors, including:
Concrete floors: One of the most common types for applying coatings such as epoxy or polyurethane, due to their durability and their ability to protect concrete from wear, chemicals, and moisture.
Wood floors: Special coatings are available for wood to protect them from wear, water, and UV radiation.
Garage floors: Often concrete, these floors benefit from epoxy coatings that resist oil stains, tire marks, and heavy loads.
Industrial floors: In factories or warehouses, strong coatings such as epoxy are often used for their resistance to heavy machinery and chemical spills.
Commercial floors: In shops, offices, and public spaces, coatings are applied for aesthetics and durability, often with slip-resistant properties.
Kitchens and bathrooms: In these areas, coatings that are waterproof and easy to clean are essential.
Sports floors: Specific coatings are used to provide cushioning and grip in gyms and sports facilities.
Each floor and environment has specific requirements, so it is important to choose the right coating that suits the intended use and the characteristics of the floor.
Are the floor coatings heat-resistant?
Our coatings are resistant to a certain degree of heat (such as a cup of hot tea or a pan of boiling water), but at extremely high temperatures they may discolor, soften, or become damaged. They are, however, suitable for normal household or commercial use, where direct exposure to very high temperatures is unlikely.
Can my floor become discolored?
Yes, Epoxy floor coating can discolor under certain circumstances. The main factors that can lead to discoloration are:
UV exposure: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause epoxy coatings to yellow or discolor. This is one of the most common causes of discoloration in epoxy. We counter this by adding a UV blocker to our coatings.
Chemical Substances: Some chemicals can react with epoxy and cause discoloration.
Age: Over time epoxy can naturally discolor, especially if exposed to the factors mentioned above.
To minimize discoloration, you can choose a UV-resistant topcoat or a specially formulated epoxy that is more resistant to UV light and chemicals. Regular maintenance and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to sunlight can also help preserve the coating’s original color.
What requirements should my floor meet before I apply epoxy floor coating?
Before you apply epoxy coating, your floor must meet a number of conditions to ensure that the coating adheres well and lasts a long time:
Clean: The floor must be free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, or other contaminants. A thorough cleaning is essential.
Dry: The floor must be completely dry. Any moisture can affect the adhesion of the epoxy and lead to problems such as blistering or delamination.
Level and Repaired: Any cracks, holes or irregularities in the floor should be repaired and leveled. A level substrate ensures an even application of the coating.
Roughened: Especially on smooth concrete floors it is often necessary to roughen the surface (for example by sanding or blasting). This provides better adhesion of the epoxy.
Moisture content: Check the moisture content of the floor. Excessive moisture can cause problems. The acceptable moisture level can vary depending on the epoxy product.
No old Coatings or Seals: If there are old paint layers, seals or other coatings on the floor, these may need to be removed before applying the epoxy.
Temperature and Humidity: Ensure that the conditions in the room are suitable. The ideal temperature and humidity for applying epoxy vary by product, so check the specifications.
It is important to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions for the epoxy coating and, if necessary, seek professional advice for specific situations.
Can you apply Epoxy floor coating safely as a consumer?
When applying Epoxy floor coating, it is important to consider various safety aspects. First of all, ensure a well-ventilated space by opening windows and doors and, if necessary, using fans. This helps to remove fumes and odors. Personal protection is crucial; wear nitrile gloves, safety goggles and protective clothing such as long sleeves and long trousers. Be careful with the epoxy resin and hardener, as these are chemicals that can cause irritation. Keep the area free from open flames and do not smoke while working to prevent fire hazards. Store all materials safely and out of reach of children and pets. Follow the manufacturer's instructions closely, both for mixing and applying the coating. Also make sure you know what to do in case of contact with the skin or eyes, or if fumes are inhaled. Finally, use the correct tools and ensure they are in good condition to prevent accidents. By following these safety measures, you can work safely with Epoxy floor coating.
Can it withstand frost?
Yes, once the coating has been applied, it can withstand frost. As long as the product is still in the can, it must be stored frost-free.
How long does an Epoxy floor coating last?
The lifespan of an Epoxy floor coating can vary depending on several factors, such as the traffic on the floor, the quality of the materials and the quality of the installation. Our coating lasts (if properly applied and maintained) 10 years in commercial or industrial environments, and often much longer in a home.
