Epoxy floor coating

An epoxy floor coating turns a concrete floor into a strong, sealed floor that is easy to keep clean. You apply the coating yourself with a roller, in almost any RAL colour. Epoxy floor coating is suitable for the garage, shed, workshop, cellar, hallway and living room.

At Ecoatingstore you choose from more than 180 colours in two quality levels, with all the primers, topcoats and tools you need for the job. Want to buy an epoxy floor coating? Order before 12:00 and your parcel leaves the same day.

What is an epoxy floor coating?

An epoxy floor coating is a two-component floor finish made of epoxy resin and a hardener. After mixing, the two components react and form a hard, wear-resistant layer that bonds firmly to a well-prepared substrate.

The coating seals the surface. As a result, the floor absorbs less dirt and liquid, gives off less dust and is easier to keep clean. Because you roll the coating on rather than pour it, the layer stays thin and follows the shape of the existing floor.

What is the difference with a poured floor or floor paint?

A poured floor is considerably thicker, is poured and levelled, and in practice calls for a professional. You roll on an epoxy floor coating yourself, which makes it more accessible and usually cheaper, while you still get a hard-wearing, long-lasting finish. A poured floor does level the substrate; a coating doesn't.

Ordinary floor paint is mainly a finish. A 2K epoxy coating forms a harder film and so copes better with internal transport, machinery and heavy foot traffic. For a light load paint may be enough; for a garage or workshop a two-component coating is the logical choice.

Basic or Pro: which epoxy floor coating should you choose?

At Ecoatingstore every colour is available in two versions.

  • Basic is the standard water-based 2K coating: solvent-free, low-odour and hard-wearing. Fine for sheds, cellars, storage rooms and living spaces without direct sunlight.
  • Pro has all the properties of Basic, plus a UV blocker against yellowing, an extra-hardened binder for heavy loads and plasticiser resistance. That last point matters if car tyres stand on the floor, for example in a garage or workshop.

Not sure which version? Look at the heaviest load the floor will take and the amount of daylight in the room, or ask us for advice.

Why choose an epoxy floor coating?

Hard-wearing under daily use
The cured epoxy layer is hard and limits marks from trolleys, tools, goods and foot traffic. This keeps the substrate protected for longer.

Protection against oil and liquids
With the right layer build-up you get a liquid-tight finish. Oil, grease, water and cleaning products stay on the surface instead of soaking into the concrete. Epoxy resists many chemicals well; exactly how well depends on the substance, the concentration, the temperature and the contact time. For special chemical loads, ask for advice beforehand.

Easy to keep clean:
A coated floor produces less dust and picks up dirt less easily. Sweeping, vacuuming and mopping with water and a mild cleaner is usually enough.

More grip where needed
A smooth epoxy floor can become slippery when wet or oily. In that case mix anti-slip powder into the coating system: allow about 150 grams per 5 kg of coating. A coarser texture gives more grip, but needs a little more attention when cleaning.

Solvent-free and low-odour
Our floor coatings are water-based and solvent-free, with no volatile organic compounds. That is pleasant to work with in spaces that are hard to ventilate, such as a cellar or an integrated garage.

Epoxy floor coating in RAL colours

You put the floor together in the colour that suits the space. Shades of grey such as RAL 7035 and RAL 7016 are the most popular for garages, sheds and workshops. For living spaces and showrooms, lighter shades are more often chosen, or a deep black or white.

View the collections by colour: grey, blue, green, red, brown, yellow and orange. Your colour isn't among them? We mix any RAL colour on request.

With different colours you can also clearly separate walkways, storage bays and work zones.

Where can you use epoxy floor coating?

Garage and shed
The coating protects against oil stains, tyre marks and moisture and makes the floor quick to clean. Preferably choose the Pro version here because of its plasticiser resistance.

Workshop, warehouse and production hall
For heavy and repeated loads we recommend the heavier system of our industrial floor coating, optionally with anti-slip.

Living room, hallway and kitchen
Indoors, a coating gives a sleek floor with a seamless feel that reflects light and is easy to maintain. Take direct sunlight into account: in that case choose Pro with UV blocker.

Shop, showroom and office
A presentable, sealed finish in your brand colour, able to withstand foot traffic.

Epoxy is not intended for outdoor use: UV radiation and weather can cause the coating to discolour and degrade.

Which substrate is suitable?

Concrete and cement-bound floors are the most suitable substrates. The floor must be dry, clean, load-bearing and free of dust, oil, grease and loose parts.

A coating does not level. So repair cracks, holes and damage beforehand. Sand or roughen smooth floors so the coating has enough grip. Existing paint layers or coatings may only stay if they are completely firmly attached. If in doubt, first apply a small test area.

Do you need a primer?

On porous, absorbent or locally repaired concrete floors, yes. An epoxy floor primer improves adhesion, limits differences in absorption and forms an even base. This reduces the chance of air bubbles, colour differences and unnecessary coating consumption.

Allow about 100 grams of primer per m². Our water-based primer is dry after about six hours at 20 °C.

How do you apply an epoxy floor coating?

  1. Prepare. Check for cracks, moisture and loose parts, repair damage, degrease the floor, let it dry, sand smooth substrates and then remove all dust.
  2. Prime. Apply primer where needed and let it dry according to the product instructions.
  3. Mix. Mix component A and B into a uniform mass. Don't prepare more than you can use within the pot life.
  4. Roll. Spread the coating evenly with a 2K roller and finish edges and corners with a brush. We recommend two coats, with about 12 hours between coats.
  5. Finish. If needed, add anti-slip powder or apply a topcoat for extra protection and shine.

The full explanation with tips is in our guide to applying epoxy floor coating.

Drying time and curing

The drying time depends on temperature, humidity, ventilation and layer thickness. The floor can usually be walked on after 12 to 24 hours. For full curing and maximum mechanical and chemical resistance, allow about seven days. So don't put machines, vehicles, racking and heavy materials back too early.

Maintenance and lifespan

Remove loose dirt regularly and mop with water and a mild cleaner. Clear up oil, grease and chemicals quickly and avoid aggressive or abrasive cleaning products.

If properly applied and maintained, our coatings last about ten years in commercial and industrial environments, and often longer in a home. Minor damage can usually be cleaned locally, sanded and recoated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Over 2k Epoxy floor coatings

Is Epoxy floor coating slip-resistant?

Epoxy floor coatings can be slippery when wet; for example, in sanitary areas or large kitchens you can choose to mix an anti-slip powder into the coating.

Can epoxy be applied over existing floors?

Yes, epoxy can be applied over most existing floors; the most important thing is that the floor is clean and free of dust. In addition, it is always advised to degrease the floor and pre-treat it by sanding.

How long does it take for an epoxy floor to fully cure?

The curing of an epoxy floor can vary and is influenced by temperature and humidity. Most floors are dry to walk on after 12-24 hours. For full curing and maximum (chemical) load, one should allow approximately 7 days.

Are epoxy floors environmentally friendly?

Epoxy floors are durable and long-lasting. Our water-based coatings are solvent-free and therefore contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

How long does an epoxy floor coating last?

The lifespan of an Epoxy floor coating can vary depending on several factors, such as the traffic on the floor, the quality of the materials and the quality of the installation. Our coating lasts (if applied and maintained correctly) 10 years in commercial or industrial environments, and often much longer in a home.

Can Epoxy floor coating be used outside?

Epoxy floor coatings are generally not suitable for outdoor use because they can discolor and degrade under the influence of UV radiation and extreme weather conditions. However, there are special types of coatings available that are designed to be more resistant to outdoor conditions.

Are there any disadvantages to using Epoxy floor coating?

Although Epoxy floor coating offers many advantages, there are also some disadvantages. Epoxy can be slippery when wet, although this can be remedied with anti-slip additives. It can also be prone to scratches and may discolor or yellow after prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Can epoxy floor coatings be repaired if they get damaged?

Yes, damage to Epoxy floor coatings can usually be repaired. Small scratches or cracks can be filled with an epoxy repair product. For larger damage it may be necessary to sand the damaged part of the floor and recoat it. It is important to know that the color of the new coating may not exactly match the older, existing coating.

How do you best apply epoxy to your floor?

To apply epoxy to your floor most effectively, follow these steps:

Prepare: Make sure the floor is clean, dry and free of dust, grease or oil. Repair any cracks.

Apply primer: Apply an epoxy primer for better adhesion.

Mix: Mix the epoxy resin and hardener according to the instructions.

Apply: Apply the epoxy evenly with a roller. Work in small sections.

See our full guide here.

How much does an epoxy floor cost per m2?

That depends on the coating and the number of coats. Basic costs from €0,00 per m² per coat, Pro from €0,00 per m² per coat. We recommend 2 coats, so double that amount.

Can epoxy be applied to a concrete floor?

Yes, epoxy can definitely be applied to a concrete floor. Concrete is even one of the most suitable surfaces for epoxy coatings because of its strength and flatness. Before you apply the epoxy, it is important to ensure that the concrete floor is clean, dry and free of cracks, oil or dust. Pre-treating the floor, such as sanding or applying a primer, may also be necessary to ensure good adhesion.

What is the difference between a coating and a poured floor?

The difference is in the thickness and the method of application: Epoxy floor coating is a thinner layer that is rolled or painted, while an epoxy poured floor is thicker and is poured and spread for a seamless finish.

I want to order a different color floor, is that possible?

Absolutely! We can mix any colour for you. Email info@ecoating.store or call +31 85 238 9080 to hear the options.

How long between 2 coats of epoxy paint?

Usually you can apply the next coat after 12 hours.

What is the difference between PU and epoxy?

The difference between PU (polyurethane) and epoxy coatings mainly lies in their physical properties and applications:

Flexibility: PU is more flexible than epoxy. This makes PU better able to resist scratches and impacts, while epoxy is harder and more wear-resistant.

UV resistance: PU coatings are generally UV-stable and do not yellow quickly in the sun, whereas epoxy can yellow when exposed to UV radiation. We address this by adding a UV-Blocker to our coatings.

Chemical resistance: Epoxy generally has better resistance to chemicals than PU, which is why it is often used in industrial environments.

Which type of coating is best for my floor?

To determine which coating is suitable for your type of floor, there are a number of factors you should consider:

Floor Type: Different floors such as concrete, wood, or tiles require specific coatings. For concrete, epoxy and polyurethane are popular choices.

Use of the Space: In industrial or commercial spaces where heavy loads occur, a strong and durable coating such as epoxy is ideal.

Exposure to Chemicals: If your floor is exposed to chemicals, oil, or acids, a chemically resistant coating such as epoxy is recommended.

Aesthetic Preferences: For a glossy, seamless finish a poured floor such as epoxy or PU may be suitable, while other options might be better for a more natural look.

Budget and Maintenance: Also consider your budget and how much maintenance you are willing to do. Some coatings may be more expensive to purchase but require less upkeep.

It's always a good idea to seek advice. Contact us if you have any questions about what suits you best.

For which types of floors are there floor coatings?

Floor coatings can be applied to different types of floors, including:

Concrete floors: One of the most common types for applying coatings such as epoxy or polyurethane, because of their durability and ability to protect concrete against wear, chemicals, and moisture.

Wooden floors: Special coatings are available for wood to protect it from wear, water and UV radiation.

Garage floors: Often concrete, these floors benefit from epoxy coatings that are resistant to oil stains, tire marks and heavy loads.

Industrial floors: In factories or warehouses strong coatings such as epoxy are often used for their resistance to heavy machinery and chemical spills.

Commercial floors: In shops, offices, and public spaces coatings are applied for aesthetics and durability, often with slip-resistant properties.

Kitchens and Bathrooms: In these spaces coatings that are waterproof and easy to clean are essential.

Sports floors: Specific coatings are used to provide cushioning and grip in gyms and sports facilities.

Each floor and environment has specific requirements, so it is important to choose the right coating that fits the intended use and the characteristics of the floor.

Are the floor coatings heat resistant?

Our coatings are resistant to a certain degree of heat (such as a cup of hot tea or a pan of boiling water), but can discolor, soften, or be damaged at extremely high temperatures. However, they are suitable for normal household or commercial use, where direct exposure to very high temperatures is unlikely.

Can my floor start to discolor?

Yes, Epoxy floor coating can discolor under certain circumstances. The main factors that can lead to discoloration are:

UV exposure: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause epoxy coatings to yellow or discolor. This is one of the most common causes of discoloration in epoxy. We counter this by adding a UV blocker to our coatings.

Chemical Substances: Some chemicals can react with epoxy and cause discoloration.

Age: Over time epoxy can naturally discolor, especially if exposed to the factors mentioned above.

To minimize discoloration, you can choose a UV-resistant topcoat or a specially formulated epoxy that is more resistant to UV light and chemicals. Regular maintenance and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to sunlight can also help preserve the original color of the coating.

What should my floor comply with before I apply Epoxy floor coating?

Before you apply epoxy coating, your floor must meet a number of conditions to ensure the coating adheres well and lasts a long time:

Clean: The floor must be free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, or other contaminants. A thorough cleaning is essential.

Dry: The floor must be completely dry. Any moisture can affect the adhesion of the epoxy and lead to problems such as blistering or peeling.

Level and Repaired: Any cracks, holes, or unevenness in the floor must be repaired and leveled. A level substrate ensures an even application of the coating.

Roughened: Especially for smooth concrete floors it is often necessary to roughen the surface (for example by sanding or blasting). This provides better adhesion for the epoxy.

Moisture content: Check the moisture content of the floor. Excessive moisture can cause problems. The acceptable moisture level may vary depending on the epoxy product.

No old Coatings or Sealers: If there are old paint layers, sealers, or other coatings on the floor, these may need to be removed before applying the epoxy.

Temperature and Humidity: Ensure that the conditions in the room are suitable. The ideal temperature and humidity for applying epoxy vary by product, so check the specifications.

It is important to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions for the epoxy coating and, if necessary, seek professional advice for specific situations.

Can you safely apply epoxy floor coating as a consumer?
